In central heating and domestic hot water systems, the circulation pump keeps hot water moving through the installation. Without it, or when it works inefficiently, hot water reaches the taps late, some radiators do not heat up and energy is wasted.
What does the pump do?
It pushes water heated in the boiler to the radiators or the hot water line and returns the cooled water to the boiler. This keeps temperatures balanced throughout the building.
Signs of failure
Cold radiators on the upper floors, hot water arriving only after running the tap for a long time, humming or ticking from the pump, an overheating pump housing and a tripping fuse are the most common signs.
Pre-season maintenance
A check before the heating season prevents breakdowns during the busiest winter period. The pump's operation, sealing and electrical connections are checked and air is bled from the line.
Repair or replace?
Not every fault requires a new pump. Depending on the type of fault and the pump's condition, repair is often enough. If replacement is needed, a pump of the right capacity for the system should be chosen.
