In most homes and workplaces the fire extinguisher hangs on a wall, and most of the time nobody looks at it. Yet for it to work, it has to be full, pressurised and in good condition. If you notice any of the signs below, it is time to have your extinguisher checked.
The gauge needle is not in the green zone
On extinguishers with a gauge, the needle should point to the green zone. If it is in the red zone, the pressure has dropped and the extinguisher may not discharge enough agent during a fire.
The extinguisher has been used
Even a few seconds of use lowers the pressure. A partially used extinguisher will not perform as expected the next time it is needed. Every used extinguisher should be refilled.
The safety pin or seal is missing
A missing pin or broken seal may mean the extinguisher has been tampered with or used.
The body is damaged
If you see dents, rust, a cracked hose or a damaged valve, do not rely on the extinguisher and have it checked.
Periodic servicing is due
Even unused extinguishers need servicing at set intervals. These intervals are defined by the relevant standards; you can check the last service date on the label.
